Mikrotik is an affordable router and switch platform - » / - but again, you will have to be willing to invest time and effort to learn how to operate this.įar end of the spectrum is (fl)ebay scavanging something, but that's only if you know what you're after hardware and capabilities-wise, and the specs inside and out. If you don't want DIY, pfsense and Untangle sell their own appliance-based options, respectively.

You will have to be willing to invest some time and effort to learning how to use the software, and you will have to get something separate to handle the WIFI, but it canīe pretty rewarding. Untangle and Sophos XG are others out there. Offhand, agree that repurposed PC+NIC+router/firewall distro is a starting point, like the aforementioned pfsense. What are your current UP/DOWN internet speeds? Any possiblity of that going faster in the near/midterm? What's your expectation of support? Including replacement hardware, updated software, licence keys (if applicable), "how do I?" support, etc.? Recommendations welcome.Got a more specific budget in mind than "a few hundred dollars?" I am happy to spend a few hundred dollars if need be. I'm not a "network" person but am technically savvy.

You definitely don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on this project if you're willing to look around a bit and wheel and deal with ppl where necessary. I suspect this i5 will easily handle up to 1.5Gb and probably beyond that. Not because I need an i5 for my Fibe 500, but because I stumbled upon the kijiji listing for $75, talked them down to $40, slapped in an extra NIC and have a router that will last me for quite some time to come.

I'm personally running a Dell SFF 4th Gen i5. Got it for $25 on kijiji, slapped in a low profile Intel NIC to add to the onboard Intel NIC and for ~$55 I built a friend a router that easily handles their 500/500 fibre internet without breaking a sweat. My most recent build was a Dell SFF 2nd Gen i3 with 4GB of RAM. If you don't have an old PC, buy a small form factor PC off kijiji for <$100, throw in extra low profile NIC(s) as needed and you're good to go.Īt least around where I am, people give away these Dell and HP SFF PCs with 2nd, 3rd, even 4th gen i3/i5 processors in them all the time for under $100.
